Real Energy Solution Gone with the Government Wind

A recent announcement by the Saskatchewan Party to double its wind power generation is yet another continuation of the same strategy we saw under the NDP- big government control over power production in Saskatchewan.

Their plan is to add another 200 megawatts of wind power to SaskPower’s generation capacity by procuring that power from an independent power source through a tendering process. The problem is that the Saskatchewan Party- like the NDP- is reluctant to change the status quo approach of big government control over the means of power production.

We are on the brink of an energy crisis in Saskatchewan because of the NDP’s short- sighted political motivation to offer cheap power by making no investments in production facilities. The result is a shortfall in future power to move our economy and our society forward.

The Saskatchewan Party’s meagre commitment to renewable energy is pathetic. The solution to creating an energy strategy based on renewable resources is not through big government - it is through entrepreneurship. We must create an environment where all individuals in Saskatchewan have the freedom and the power to invest in renewable energy and contribute to our energy needs, and the only thing stopping anybody from participating should be their own personal initiative and entrepreneurial spirit.

The hardest thing for proponents of centralized government power to understand is that SaskPower is a public utility that should be focused on distribution and transmission of power- but need not be the only producer of that power.
