Clydesdales Up Close

Yesterday afternoon I attended the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. While it seemed that most of the show won’t get really ramped up for a few days, I did have a great chance to spend several hours behind the scenes with the members of the Saskatchewan Clydesdale Association.

I was there mostly out of personal interest, and there were a lot of people who were willing to share their stories with me about how they got into the industry, and how much they enjoy events like Agribition.

What struck me the most is the sense of community between everyone in the Association. Brought together by a mutual passion for Clydesdales, there were people from all over the province- many of them came as a family- and I got a real sense that many of these people go back many, many years. They readily congratulated those who showed horses, despite its competitive nature. I was able to see in these members a community spirit that is uniquely Saskatchewan.

I walked away from my afternoon in the Clydesdale barn with my eyes to an entire industry that I knew little about, and I even made a few new friends. An added bonus was being able to see these majestic animals up close. If you have never seen a Clydesdale up close, I suggest you get over to Agribition to take a look. They are truly stunning creatures.
