Supernatural at Fort Battleford
Last night I went to Fort Battleford National Historic Site to check out their Ghost Walk Tour. It differs from the usual Fort tours in that it is done at dusk, and focuses on the allegedly supernatural occurrences that have taken place at the Fort over its long, rich history.
I have read both “Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan” and “More Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan” by Jo-Anne Christensen purely out of curiosity. I did not recall reading about any major ‘sightings’ at Fort Battleford, but I do find these kinds of things entertaining so I thought I would take advantage of the opportunity.
The tour was pretty spooky, mostly because we were walking through very old original Fort buildings in the dark while a full moon rose up in the sky. We were led by a single candle held by our tour guide, and in each building he regaled stories of alleged supernatural occurrences as recounted by Fort employees, old newspapers, and even some personal sightings of his own.
Several of the ‘ghosts’ had names and specific activities associated with them. In many of these instances old newspapers and journals would indicate a horrific death with graphic details…and it is believed that these ghosts are what remains of those who passed. The eerie part was being in the same room where some of these awful things occurred.
Whether you believe in the supernatural, simply have an open mind, or do not believe in ghosts at all the tour is worth checking out. If nothing else you get to learn some more history of Fort Battleford, and have a little bit of fun doing it!
